EDITING, WRITING
Recent published work:
All phases of an annual feature: I surveyed California's largest law firms, analyzed the data, interviewed firm leaders, wrote stories, edited graphics.
More writing: Columns, book reviews, and op-eds (for others' bylines — or my own).
I've also led and edited major packages and investigations.
As weekend editor of daily newsrooms, I dispatched breaking news teams, edited reports from the field, updated as information evolved. And I've edited academic books and doctoral theses.
STRATEGY
Websites, social media, campaigns
Websites - I've led creation of two mid-size websites, from proposal and design through launch, including content development, writing, and management.
Branding - stakeholder research, goal-setting, renaming, design, collateral, stewardship.
Blogging - For two nonprofits, I've written and edited thought leaders' writing on current issues, publicized events, and amplified the organizations' profiles.
Graphics I've made include this one urging Gov. Jerry Brown to sign SB 63 so more parents could take leave without getting fired; he did!
Newsletters - I've created and launched two, including design, photos, writing, production, list management, and dissemination.
Social media - I've live-tweeted and streamed events, planned campaigns, and hosted Twitter chats.
Here are a white paper and a report I wrote.
My press releases spark coverage .
Antiracism and commitment to equity
My purpose is to support people whose communities have traditionally been underserved and disrespected — to fight racism and pursue equity in education, law enforcement, employment, and housing.
As a nonprofit communicator, I have amplified and clarified the work of organizations that safeguard low-income workers' rights and redesign community colleges for equity.
As a journalist, at the San Francisco Chronicle, I led coverage of race, immigration, LGBTQ affairs, religion, disability and parenting. At the Contra Costa Times, a prize-winning investigation I led showed how education policy was re-segregating California schools. At the Associated Press, as a business editor, I consistently brought new voices into stories.
From volunteering as an undergraduate to co-founding an antiracism community group in Oakland and leading the parent-teacher organization at Oakland Technical High School — I have focused in my personal life, as well, on equity and eradicating racism and bias.
